CALABASH AND GOURD PRODUCTS
African gourd, otherwise also known as calabash is the fruit of a vine. The vine is mostly grown for it’s fruit. The fruits are harvested, dried and used as bottles for storing and serving water and palm wine, utensils, pipes, spoons, soup and drinking bowls, cups and percussion instruments. Pieces of calabash are decorated and painted for wall decorations.
The immature fruit is used as vegetable in some Chinese and Italian cuisine. Large mature fruits are used as floats in India. The gourd seeds are used for drinks in Central America and Tanzania.
